Navigating Marriott Credit Card Rules

Chase has brought back its elevated welcome bonus for the personal Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless credit card. The standard offer for this card is 3 free night certificates. Right now the welcome bonus gets you 5 free night certificates after spending $5,000 in 3 months. This is an estimated $1,200 value!

If you’re new to the points and miles world, it is important to know some things about Marriott’s free night certificates. First, free night certificates have a point limit for rooms. Some will limit your free room to rooms that cost 35,000 points per night, while some can go as high as 85,000 points per room. So be sure to read the fine print of your certificates. The current certificates for the Chase Bonvoy Boundless card can be used for a room of 50,000 points per night or less. The second thing to know is you can add up to 15,000 points to your free night certificates to help get you the room you want. You can transfer those points to your Marriott account from your other Marriott cards, American Express account, or Chase account. Third, you can use your certificates one at a time or all at once. Lastly, certificates do expire. So be sure to use them by the designated date. The current elevated bonus of 5 free night certificates expire 12 months after being issued.

This offer is amazing HOWEVER, be aware of the Marriott credit card rules if you want to apply for the Chase Bonvoy Boundless card. This is necessary information if you are trying to build your Marriott strategy. Both Chase AND American Express have co-branded Marriott cards. Since both banks sponsor these cards for the same hotel chain, they have rules of when you can apply for Marriott cards with each bank.

Let me simplify the rules for you:

  • You must wait 24 months from when you received a Marriott welcome bonus to apply for Marriott card from the other bank. For example, if you take advantage of the current Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card, then you cannot get ANY American Express Marriott card until it has been 24 months since you received the bonus.
  • You can only have ONE Chase Marriott personal card at a time, even if its been 24 months since you last applied. You can however add a Chase Marriott Business card 90 days after you applied for the personal one or vice versa.
  • You can have all of the American Express Marriott cards you want, but keep in mind that American Express limits you to only being able to have 5 personal and business credit cards at a time. So if you want other American Express credit cards, don’t get too many Marriott cards. If you are going to get multiple American Express Marriott cards, be sure to keep the 90 day rule between credit card applications.
